GARDENING: The first gardener’s group get together of the new growing season was held on Thursday night in St Canice’s Hall, Borris in Ossory. There are lots of things to be done in the garden at this time of year. Now is the time to move rhubarb and any other shrubs, also apple trees and soft fruit plants should be pruned. To find out more, please come to the next gardening get together on Thursday March 10th in St Canice’s Hall at 8pm. It is fun and it is free and everyone learns something new every time.
LADIES FOOTBALL: Borris-In-Ossory Ladies Football Club held a Valentine Cabaret in Rosie O’Grady’s on Saturday night February 12. Thanks is extended to all who supported this event. Thanks to John Gaffney, proprietor Rosie O’Grady’s and to the staff of Sal’s Diner who provided the refreshments. The committee would like to see more support from the parents of the girls at fund raising events such as this. It is very difficult to run a club and provide facilities for players without financial assistance. Congratulations to Lily Ward who was the winner of the door prize and to Jennifer Origan, Dan Casey, Rose Ryan and Pat Phelan who won the hampers sponsored by Kelly’s Bar.
PIONEER ASSOCIATION: A meeting of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association will take place in St Canice’s Hall, Borris in Ossory on Thursday February 24th at 8pm. Any pioneers who think they may be entitled to the Fr Cullen Medal, Gold pioneer pins or silver pioneer pins please contact Noreen Whelan at 0505-41132 or any member of the Pioneer Association as soon as possible.
CONFIRMATION ENROLMENT: An Enrolment ceremony for Confirmation candidates and their parents / guardians will take place at the 11am Mass in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory on Sunday February 27th. Confirmation Day in the parish is Sunday April 3rd. The first choir practice for this ceremony will be held on Thursday March 10th in the FAS Office at 8pm.
LOURDES PILGRIMAGE: The annual Ossory Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from Sunday May 22nd to Friday May 27th inclusive. Bookings can be made for ordinary pilgrims and for invalids by phoning Eleanor at 051-880414 during office hours (10.30am to 2.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). This year pilgrims will fly from Cork Airport and the total cost is 720 euro pps which includes the coach to and from the Airport.
PROGRESSIVE 25 DRIVE: The winners of last week’s Progressive 25 Drive in the O’Brien Hall were as follows 1st - Billy Kirby and Tommy White, 2nd – Joe Bolger and Sean Kenny, Michelle Fitzpatrick and Edmund Kenny, Mary Jo Ryan and Bridget Gleeson, Michael Murphy and Jack Maher, Joe Cass and Mary Kelly, 10th game - Sean and Anna Bourke, 20th game - Jacob Fairbrother and Joe Dooley. Raffle winners were - Michael Muldowney, Tim Tierney, Anna Costigan, Billy Hogan and Lucy Bergin.
The Progressive 25 Drive will continue next Thursday night in the O’Brien Hall and the starting time is 9pm.
The annual Progressive 25 Drive in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland will take place in the O’Brien Hall on Thursday night March 24th. all are welcome to come along and support this worthy cause. Non card players who would like to support the event can do so by giving a subscription or donating a raffle prize.
NINES 25 CARDS
The final of the 27 nines cards took place after the Progressive 25 Drive last Thursday night and the winners were Marie Quinn, Sean Bourke and Anne Russell, runners up Eugene Martin, Sean Bourke and Peggy Martin, Johnny Dalton, P.J. Holohan and Anne Russell. All nine winners received a cash prize.
The club extends its sympathy to the McNeill family, Cullohill on the sad death of the late Billy. He was a great supporter of all the big card games in the club.
The last monthly meeting of Knockaroo ICA Guild took place in the Community Centre on Thursday night February 10th, presided over by Joan Kelly. A vote of sympathy was passed with the Fitzpatrick family, Grangemore on the recent death of their sister, the late Mrs Doris Breslin, Dublin. The raffle winners were Joan Kelly and Anne Dunne. The next meeting will be held on Thursday March 10 at 8pm.
A fund raising Cabaret in aid of Knockaroo Church Restoration Fund will take place in Fitzpatrick’s Lounge, Clonmore on Saturday night April 9. Tickets for this event are currently on sale.
