“It’s two kilometres from the Dooradoyle site, it’s a 28 minute ride from both Ennis and Nenagh.

“It is the beginning now of how we can think about the development of healthcare services right across the region, now that we know we have this crucial, crucial site.”

She hailed the purchase of the site as an “incredibly strategic acquisition”, given its proximity to University Hospital Limerick.

She added that the 44-acre site will be one of the largest hospital campuses in the country and provide for the whole Mid-West region.

Minister Carroll MacNeill also announced that she would be commissioning a report into healthcare services across the region.

She highlighted the need to improve services in Nenagh, particularly around cancer infusion.

She insisted that she didn’t want people from Tipperary having to travel to Limerick for such treatment.

Minister Carroll MacNeill was joined at the announcement by a number of other public representatives, including Minister Patrick O’Donovan and Mayor of Limerick John Moran.
