The bodies of Bridgid 'Biddy' O'Brien and Jamie McGinn were discovered at a property in Bray on Wednesday morning

A couple who were found dead at their home in Ireland on Wednesday morning had previously suffered an unimaginable tragedy when their two young children died in a devastating house fire nine years ago.

The couple, named locally as Bridgid 'Biddy' O'Brien and Jamie McGinn, were discovered at a property in the Cois Cairn estate on Old Connaught Avenue in Bray shortly after 8am on Wednesday, October 21.

Ms O'Brien, who was in her 40s, was found inside the house, while Mr McGinn, who was in his 30s, was discovered outside the property.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, with post-mortem examinations expected to play a key role in determining what happened.

Investigators have said there is currently no evidence of third-party involvement, although all lines of inquiry remain open.

The heartbreaking discovery comes nine years after the couple lost their two children, four-year-old Jordan McGinn and his younger sister Holly, in a devastating apartment fire in Clondalkin, Dublin, in March 2017.

The blaze also claimed the lives of Ms O'Brien's cousin, Annemarie O'Brien, who was pregnant at the time, and her two-year-old daughter, Paris.

Ms O'Brien was the sole survivor of the fire and suffered extensive burns, requiring prolonged hospital treatment.

An inquest subsequently found that the fire was accidental and had most likely started when a candle or tea light ignited a television.

The tragedy had a profound impact on the couple, who were described by members of their local community as quiet, private and devoted to one another.

The discovery of their bodies has prompted widespread shock and sadness in Bray, where the couple were well known.

Relatives of the couple have posted heartfelt tributes on social media following their deaths, expressing their grief at this terrible tragedy.

The property was sealed off on Wednesday to allow members of the Garda Technical Bureau to carry out a forensic examination.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed, while an incident room has been established at Dún Laoghaire Garda Station.

Family Liaison Officers have also been appointed to provide support to the bereaved families.

Gardaí have confirmed that the results of post-mortem examinations will help determine the direction of their investigation.

Anyone with information that could assist Gardaí is asked to contact Dún Laoghaire Garda Station on 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Investigations are ongoing.
