William Maunsell's Dublin Marathon run set a new Tipperary record

Clonmel AC’s William Maunsell produced a superb performance to cross the line as the third Irish finisher in the Irish Life Dublin Marathon.

His time for the classic distance of 26.2 miles was 2:14:22, which is a record for a Tipperary athlete in the event.

Willie was only beaten by Hiko Tonoso of Dundrum South, Dublin and Ryan Creech from Leevale, two highly-rated athletes in their own right.

Willie runs under the guidance of club coach Seán Tobin.

Seán also hosts the club session every Tuesday and Thursday at the TÚS campus track at the Regional Sports Hub and coached many of Clonmel AC’s 41 athletes at the Dublin Marathon, which was among the highest number of competitors from any club in the country.

Willie was the tenth overall finisher in the event, which attracted some 22,500 competitors.

There were 40,000 entry requests for the event, which is Europe’s fourth-largest marathon and one of the most well-respected and popular on the calendar.

His record-breaking run crowned a successful year for Willie Maunsell.

During the summer he won the Cork City Half Marathon in dominant fashion.

He made his move at the 12-mile marker, injecting a level of pace that his close rival Peter Somba could not live with, as he pulled clear to win by a minute in 1:08:13.

This capped a great two months for the Clonmel man, after his 15th placing at the London Marathon in April, which he ran in a time of 2 hours 16 minutes.

In the full Cork City marathon another Clonmel athlete, David Mansfield, produced a great performance to finish runner-up.
