Questions remain over future of Kearney’s Castle as CPO decision is awaited

Questions were raised at the recent Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District meeting regarding the ongoing Compulsory Purchase Order process for Kearney’s Castle in Cashel.

Cllr Declan Burgess sought an update on the status of the CPO, stating that the matter represents a significant undertaking for the local authority. Cllr Liam Browne also expressed concern over the lack of clarity surrounding the project and said councillors had not been fully briefed on its current position.

Responding, District Director Damien Ginty said the council was still awaiting a decision from An Coimisiún Pleanála on the Compulsory Purchase Order relating to Kearney’s Castle.

Speaking to the Tipperary Star Cllr Browne said that he hoped the process would be progressed as quickly as possible, noting the building’s central location in Cashel. He said the structure required attention without delay, warning that it would continue to deteriorate if left without works.

“It is a building that needs to be worked on fairly soon because when it is not being worked on it is not going to get any better,” he said.

Cllr Browne also highlighted the visual impact of hoarding around the historic building, which is located in the town centre beside the Plaza. “We have got hoarding around a historical building in the middle of town right beside the Plaza, it just doesn’t look good,” he said.

Cllr Browne said there was uncertainty among councillors regarding the council’s intentions for the property. “We have always said we don’t have enough people who go to The Rock coming into the centre of Cashel,” he said. “Maybe this is something that will bring them down into the centre and show off the wider town.”
