Council asked to urgently address safety concerns

The 80 kilometres per hour speed limit sign on the road leading to St Patrick’s Well crossroads in Marlfield, Clonmel is to be changed to a 60 kilometres per hour sign.

District Administrator Carol Creighton also told a meeting of Clonmel Borough District that the majority of this road is a rural local road with no public lighting, which meant that speed bumps weren’t an option.

She was responding to a request from Cllr John FitzGerald, who asked the council to urgently address safety concerns in this area.

He said that the road had become very fast, it still had an 80 kilometres per hour speed limit and was very narrow. He also said it had no road margins and no speed bumps.

He said he was delighted that the speed limit would be reduced.

Carol Creighton also stated that it was proposed to carry out a speed survey on the urban section of the road, the 50 kilometres per hour speed limit section, to ascertain if speeding is an issue.

A solution in line with the council’s traffic calming policy would be identified if speeding was a problem at this location, she added.
