Hadestown is a haunting and imaginative reworking of ancient Greek mythology, intertwining the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice with the volatile and powerful relationship of Hades and Persephone. Set in a mythic, industrial underworld, the musical follows Orpheus, a gifted musician whose songs have the power to heal the world, as he journeys to the depths of Hadestown in a desperate attempt to rescue Eurydice from a life shaped by poverty, fear and survival.

Written by acclaimed singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown blends folk, jazz, blues and New Orleans inspired sounds to create a rich, atmospheric score unlike any other in musical theatre.

Narrated by the quick-witted and charismatic god Hermes, the story unfolds as a lyrical meditation on love, trust, sacrifice, and the eternal tension between hope and doubt. Since its Broadway debut, Hadestown has earned widespread international praise, winning multiple Tony Awards and being lauded for its poetic storytelling, emotional depth and contemporary relevance.

This Bellvue Academy production is directed by Lisa Kelly, whose thoughtful and detailed approach brings both intimacy and scale to the storytelling. Keith Dwyer Greene’s choreography adds striking physicality and expressive movement, helping to define the contrasting worlds above ground and below.

Musical direction is led by Niall Kelly, winner of the 2025 AIMS Best Musical Director Award, whose musical leadership ensures the demanding and intricate score is delivered with clarity, power and emotional resonance.

The production is further enhanced by an evocative set design by Anthony Lawless, which creates a visually compelling world that reflects the grit, beauty and symbolism of Hadestown. The design plays a crucial role in transporting audiences between the warmth of the living world and the stark, unforgiving realm of the underworld, adding depth and atmosphere to every scene.

Staged at Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn, Clonmel, the production makes full use of the venue to create an immersive and engaging theatrical experience. With a strong ensemble cast, striking visuals, and a score that lingers long after the final note, Hadestown promises to be both a thrilling night at the theatre and a deeply moving piece of storytelling.
