It’s far from 9-5 as Drangan man due to play Dollywood
Gavin Strappe, from Drangan, is a member of bluegrass band JigJam, which has built a growing following in the United States through its blend of bluegrass, country and Irish musical influences.
Dolly Parton, the legendary singer, songwriter and country music icon, sadly passed away last month, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has made her one of the most beloved figures in music.
The legendary singer had a small but notable connection to Tipperary through a local musician whose band is set to perform at Parton’s famous Dollywood theme park next year.

Speaking to the Tipperary Star, Gavin’s father, Tom, said his son’s move to the US came as the band’s touring schedule grew, with JigJam playing festivals across the country as well as Irish festivals in cities including Chicago and Milwaukee. Gavin, who is a teacher by trade, is now based in Minnesota after marrying a local woman, but still returns home regularly and runs a bus tour through Ireland each February.
Tom, who spoke proudly of his son’s career, said the opportunities for musicians in America were significantly greater, adding: “If you can get away with playing music for a living, you’re doing well.”
Remarking on the photo of JigJam with Dolly, he said: “It’s just so class to have it.”
Gavin plays mandolin and banjo with the band, which has performed at major music festivals across the US as well as the famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where they performed in March 2023.
JigJam previously performed at Dollywood in 2021, where members of the band had their photograph taken with Dolly Parton. Now, the band is set to return to Dollywood next March, having been booked to perform for 20 dates at the Tennessee theme park.
