The works are necessary after initial plans to backfill the channel were denied by An Bord Pleneála

Tipperary County Council have advertised a contract worth an estimated €45,000 for design works, including a bridge installation, at The Mall in Templemore.

The need for the works is as a result of works carried out three years ago by the OPW, where a section of the River Suir was diverted. About half a kilometre of an open channel was left; plans to backfill the area were refused by An Bord Pleneála who demanded that a nature-based solution be found.

A plan has been drafted for ecological works at the redundant channel, including six walls and/or railings, and one 16-foot bridge for agricultural use. The council have had an initial consultation with the five affected landowners, and they say agreement has been made with all to put in boundary walls where necessary.

The council are now seeking engineering consultants to design the solution. A design for the river channel has also been drafted and agreed in principle with relevant stakeholders.
