BREAKING: Roscrea councillor throws his name in the ring ahead of Fianna Fáil convention

Roscrea's Michael Smith topped the poll in the local election

Roscrea Councillor Michael Smith has declared his intention to contest the Fianna Fáil selection convention in the Tipperary North – Northwest Kilkenny consititency.

The popular councillor has served on the council for 20 years and is the current Cathaoirleach of the Thurles-Templemore Municipal District Council.

He topped the poll in last June's Local Election in the Roscrea-Templemore LEA.

Cllr Smith told the Midland Tribune this week that after consulting "family friends and loyal supporters" he is throwing his name in the ring.

"I have worked diligently as a Councillor for Tipperary for the last 20 years.

"I have a proven track record of hard work, dedication and commitment to the people. It would be my great privilege to ask the people of North Tipperary and West Kilkenny to support my candidacy for TD in the upcoming election," Cllr. Smith told the Midland Tribune.

Cllr Smith will compete against new Nenagh councillor Ryan O'Meara at this weekend's Fianna Fáil convention selection.

The two councillors are vying for the candidacy following the shock departure of Jackie Cahill last week.
