Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society is shortlisted for seven gongs in the Waterford based Green Room Awards for its 2022 production of Chess The Musical.

The show, which is set in a Cold War era chess tournament between Russian and US chess masters, was staged at the Strand Theatre in Carrick-on-Suir for five nights last May.

It was Carrick Musical Society's first large scale production after two years of Covid-19 restrictions.

Chess clearly impressed the judges of the Waterford News & Star Green Room Awards, which have nominated the following backstage and cast members for awards: Best Musical Director- Fergal Carroll: Best Choreographer- Edel Quinlan: Best Female Performance in a Musical- Sandra Power as Florence Vassy: Best Male Performance in a Musical- Emmet Donlan as Freddie Trumper: Best Supporting Female Performance in a Musical- Tarryn Attlee as the Arbiter: Best Supporting Male Performance in a Musical- Neill Bourke as Molokov: Best Stage Management

Carrick Musical Society PRO Caolan Deehy-Power said it was brilliant that Carrick Musical Society has received so many nominations for the Green Room Awards.

“It shows the talent we have in Carrick-on-Suir that several of our lead performers in Chess are nominated and that the staging of the show is also nominated for awards. It's great to see our production of Chess being recognised. We are up against some very strong competition from Waterford musical theatre groups.

The Green Room Awards will be announced at a gala function including a variety show at the Theatre Royal in Waterford City on Sunday, February 26 at 8pm.

These awards celebrate the diversity, scale and quality of theatre, arts and culture in Waterford and its hinterland. They encompass professional and amateur musicals, drama, comedy, choral, panto, and all the roles therein, as well as art and culture events.

Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society, meanwhile, is busy rehearsing for its 2023 annual show – Phantom of the Opera, which will be staged at the Strand Theatre from Monday, April 17 to Saturday, April 22 inclusive.

Mr Deehy-Power says the Society's Facebook page has been “bombarded” with enquiries as to when tickets for the show will go on sale. Ticket booking is currently only open to Carrick Musical Society patrons and the date tickets will go on sale to the general public will be announced in another few weeks.
