Abbeyleix Garda Station
A man appeared in court for threatening to shoot and bomb gardaí before urinating in a garda station cell.
PJ Delaney, 32, of 5 Brophy Terrace, Roscrea admitted being intoxicated and abusive at Abbeyleix Garda Station and criminal damage at Portlaoise Garda Station on February 25, 2022.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was “highly intoxicated” when he began banging on the Abbeyleix Garda Station door at 10.30pm on the night in question.
He said the man was arrested and became abusive to gardaí.
He said “that he would shoot them in the head and bomb their houses,” said Sgt Kirby.
The man was taken to Portlaoise Garda Station where “he urinated in the cell” which had to be cleaned at a cost of €200. He said the man had 42 previous convictions.
Solicitor Josepine Fitzpatrick said her client had brought €100 to court for the damage to the cell.
“The accused was knocking on the garda station door as he had been threatened by other persons,” she said,
Ms Fitzpatrick said the man had then “taken umbridge” that he had been arrested.
“He felt he had been the victim on the night,” she explained.
She said he acknowledges the fact that “it is high time now that he copped himself on.”
Ms Fitzpatrick told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that the man was not drinking any more.
Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €200 for being abusive and imposed a one month sentence which he suspended for two years for the criminal damage of the cell. He took the intoxication charge into consideration.
