Michael Murphy has been elected as the new Mayor of Clonmel.

The Fine Gael councillor was unanimously elected as the town’s first citizen by his fellow councillors on Clonmel Borough District at this morning’s annual meeting at the Town Hall.

He succeeds Independent Cllr Richie Molloy.

The new Deputy Mayor is Cllr Pat English (Workers and Unemployed Action Group), whose election was also unanimous.

Cllr Murphy, who previously held the position of Mayor in 2021-22, topped the poll in the Clonmel Local Electoral Area at the recent Local Elections, and achieved the largest vote in the county with a total of 2,746 first preference votes.

He has also been selected by Fine Gael to contest the next General Election in South Tipperary.

Following his election, Cllr Murphy stated that “Clonmel, like many other towns, faces many challenges.

"I intend to face those challenges as always with a sense of optimism, to work with you, my fellow councillors, and our council team, other key stakeholders as well, in order to realise the ambition and vision we all have for Clonmel and the wider district”.
