Former Tipperary hurler Pádraic Maher
The new series of Laochra Gael on TG4 opens with Pádraic Maher, one of Tipperary’s greatest-ever hurlers and one of the most dominant centre backs of the game.
The programme will be broadcast at 9.30pm on Thursday January 23.
Padraic was born into the Maher dynasty, steeped in hurling both with Thurles Sarsfields and Tipperary, and remembered as a force in the GAA generation that raised the bar.
His presence, leadership and strength on the field meant he was always destined for greatness.
Hurling was his whole identity, it consumed him, things suffered because of hurling, he knew nothing else. That was until it came to a dramatic close; due to a neck injury, Pádraic was forced to retire from the game he loved, and he found it difficult to come to terms with that.
The programme is directed by Sarah McCoy and the dditor is Ray Kirby.
Participantsi include Pádraic Maher, Brendan Maher, Ronan Maher, Michael Fennelly, Vincent Hogan, Seamus Kennedy, Donal O’Grady, Paul Rouse, Ken McGrath, Seamus Callinan, Helen Maher and Claire Gaynor.
