Tipperary TD says Maria Steen's failure to qualify for Áras race is a 'blow for democracy'

Independent TD Mattie McGrath is 'deeply disappointed' the barrister was unable to secure enough nominations from Oireachtas members to secure her place on the ballot in the presidential election

Tipperary TD says Maria Steen's failure to qualify for Áras race is a 'blow for democracy'

Independent Tipperary South TD Mattie McGrath

Independent Tipperary South TD Mattie McGrath has expressed deep disappointment that barrister Maria Steen will not be on the presidential election ballot and has described it as a "real blow to democracy".
Deputy McGrath, who like Ms Steen is a social conservative, said the Irish people have been denied a genuine choice and the chance to see their values reflected on the national stage.
Ms Steen secured the support of 18 Oireachtas members but failed to garner the support of two more to reach the 20 needed before yesterday's deadline to qualify her to run in the upcoming election.
"Democracy should mean diversity of thought and true representation, and the presidential election should reflect the full spectrum of views and values that exist within Irish society," said the Newcastle based TD.
"Instead, the establishment has narrowed the field to three candidates, all backed by establishment parties, while silencing an outside voice.
"Maria and her team worked tirelessly and came within two nominations. Indeed I had pleaded with many of my Independent colleagues to give people the chance to decide and the chance to have an election campaign that was truly representative of all of society," he continued.
"What disappoints me most is that Independents who claim to share her values chose to look the other way when courage was needed. By stepping back, they allowed the establishment to dictate the choices available to the people.
"This is a sad day for democracy. Outsiders are clearly not welcome, and the illusion of choice has been shattered."
Deputy McGrath concluded by congratulating Maria and her team on her campaign. "Her efforts may not have been in vain and may yet be the wake-up call Ireland needs," he added.
