The event drew local interest, with councillor Richie Molloy posting on social media that he was “delighted to attend a very informative meeting in the Thinking Centre, Old Bridge Clonmel with the Palestinian Ambassador Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, chaired by our own Eddie O’Brien.”
Dr Abdalmajid, who became Palestine’s first official ambassador to Ireland following the country’s recognition of Palestinian statehood in May 2024, spoke about the ongoing situation in Gaza and efforts toward peace.
Originally from Gaza, Dr Abdalmajid began her diplomatic career with the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995. She later served in Cyprus, where she completed her doctorate in Business and Political Marketing, before taking up her post in Ireland in 2013 as deputy to the former ambassador.
During her visit, she said she believes Donald Trump will continue to pursue his peace plan in Gaza because he is seeking a Nobel Peace Prize.
The first phase of the United States ceasefire proposal, focused on the exchange of hostages, is nearly complete, though the next stage of talks remains to be negotiated.
Dr Abdalmajid added that the US President would deserve to be recognised with a peace prize if he succeeds in achieving an agreement that offers Palestinians a path to self-determination.
