Local councillor Richie Molloy said he was very honoured to be nominated by Family Carers Ireland for a seat in the Seanad.

Cllr Molloy, who is an Independent, went on to say that it is  very challenging for an Independent councillor to win on the Administrative  Panel as there is only 7 seats and the bigger parties have enough quotas’ to win at least 6 of the seats but it was  still possible for an Independent to win the last seat on the panel .

"I am hoping that my Independent colleagues will support me from Tipperary County Council as Tipperary has always been a very Independent friendly constituency. if I am successful it will be the first time an Independent councillor has won a seat on this panel .I am also calling on Tipperary party councillors to give me as high a preference as possible to enable me to continue to champion Family Carers at a National level .

If elected it would allow me to raise Family Carer issues at a national level because Family Carers are still the much forgotten people of society and are an invisible workforce saving the state millions of Euros every year .

I have been very thankful to the many Independent councillors that I have spoken to all over the country for their support during my journeys up and down the country over the last few weeks despite the horrific weather conditions which haven’t help with the campaign," said Cllr Molloy, a former Mayor of Clonmel.
