Major planning application submitted in Tipperary for brand new biogas facility

Annaholty Green Energy Limited has lodged an application seeking permission to build the facility in Annaholty, close to Birdhill in the north of the county.

The proposed development includes two anaerobic digesters, a secondary storage digester, a digestate storage tank, two manure reception tanks, a desulphurisation unit, two pasteurisation tanks, cooling tanks and various supporting infrastructure.

The plans also outline a pump room with an air filtration system, a mixing tank, offices and workshops, a rainwater harvesting system and a two-storey office building, among other features.

Annaholty Green Energy is affiliated with GreenGas, which operates a similar anaerobic digester facility in Limerick. The company first established a biogas plant in Shanagolden, Limerick, in 2010, producing biomethane for injection into Ireland’s national gas grid, a goal also shared by the proposed Tipperary facility.

According to the company, the new plant would contribute to Ireland’s transition to renewable energy and help cut greenhouse gas emissions by offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
