Some reasons why the festival is helping keep culture and traditions alive in Ireland

The Rose of Tralee still has a place in modern Ireland, writes Tipperary Live.

While some people dismiss the festival as outdated, it is still true that it remains a valuable celebration of Irish culture, community spirit, and the strong connections between Ireland and its emigrants in far off shores.

One of the greatest strengths of the Rose of Tralee is its ability to bring communities together.

This is evident at local selection events such as the Tipperary Rose Selection, where families, friends, and supporters gather to celebrate young women who represent the very best of Tipperary and showed a wide range of different interests and backgrounds.

It is not just a beauty competition, it’s an opportunity to recognise individuals for their achievements, ambitions, talents, and commitment to their communities.

The Rose of Tralee also provides an important link between Ireland and Irish communities abroad.

Contestants travel from countries around the world to take part, showcasing the global reach of Irish culture. Not to mention that the festival brings significant economic and cultural benefits to the country.

Thousands of visitors travel to Tralee each year, supporting local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and tourism.

The event also highlights Irish music, dance, language, and traditions, ensuring that these aspects of our heritage continue to thrive. Critics may argue that the festival no longer reflects modern Ireland.

However, the Rose of Tralee has evolved considerably over the years by changing some outdated rules.

Instead of complaining about the ‘lovely girls festival’, we should be looking for ways to modernise it further to suit a different Ireland that reflects women living here today.

For example, increasing the age limit would allow more women with different life experiences, careers, and backgrounds to participate.
