MMA fighter from Tipperary hoping to compete at world championships in Georgia

Kevin Walsh has won medals at world and European championships, and is a national and Four Nations champion

Kevin Walsh, an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter with SBG Clonmel, has been selected to represent Ireland at the World Championships in Georgia this September, which is a major milestone in his competitive career.

Kevin is a Youth World and Under 21 World bronze medallist, a European silver medallist, and both a Youth National champion and Four Nations champion.

Despite these accolades, he receives no state funding, as MMA remains unsupported by government sport structures in Ireland.

Competing on the world stage means covering all training, travel and accommodation costs himself.

He will be facing athletes backed by full-time funding and support, but says “That’s never stopped Irish fighters before — and it won’t stop me”.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fight for a world title,” he adds.

“Your support could be what gets me there”.

So far he has raised €759 of his €1,500 goal.
