Sharlene Mawdsley crowned the most memorable season in her athletics career by winning the women's 400 metres at the Galà dei Castelli meeting in Switzerland on Monday evening.
The Tipperary woman beat Austria’s Susanne Gogl-Walli and Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands in a time of 51.35.
It was the Newport AC athlete's first appearance since the Paris Olympics, where she was denied a medal in the women’s 4x400 metres relay, as Ireland finished fourth.
However, she can look back with enormous pride on a year during which she was part of the Irish 4x400 metres mixed relay team that won gold at the European championships in Rome in June, and was on the women's 4x400 metres relay team that won silver at the same championships.
