Killough Solar has received planning permission at the end of July 2025

Killough Solar, a new renewable energy development, has this week received planning permission for the development of a c 100MW solar farm at Killlough Farm, Thurles, Co Tipperary.

The project is led by Coolmore in cooperation with Temporis Investment Management, specialists in the renewable energy and clean technologies.

The development saw over 70 submissions made to Tipperary County Council throughout the planning process, many of whihc stated strong objections to the proposed plans from locals.

Some of the issues raised by locals included:

  • Scale of the development would result in a major visual intrusion.
  • Present road infrastructure totally unsuitable.
  • Loss of value to existing homes.
  • Proposed development could potentially prevent others from getting planning permission for future domestic dwellings.
  • Golden Vale area traditionally used for food output and brownfield sites with good roads and waste infrastructures should be considered as an alternative.

Permission for the project was granted on 28 July 2025.
