Tipperary Council plan to move Thurles depot, with hopes of more town parking in its place

Tipperary Council are planning to move their depot to a new location on the outskirts of Thurles, which could mean more parking spaces created at Parnell Street carpark
Tipperary County Council is planning to move its depot building from its current home at Parnell Street in Thurles to a new location on a green field site at Archerstown Industrial Park at Turtulla, on the outskirts of the town.
The move could be a positive one for drivers in the town, as if the depot moves it could make way for more parking at Parnell Street carpark.
The reason for the move, say the council, is that the current building is no longer adequate: “The site is constrained in terms of staff welfare facilities, workspace, vehicle parking, circulation and material storage.”
“The depot is also located within a busy public car park in the town centre, resulting in operational constraints for both depot activities and public parking provision.”
“Relocation of the depot to Archerstown Industrial Park would release this strategically located town centre site, providing an opportunity to extend and enhance public car parking capacity within Thurles.”
The new warehouse building will comprise a new welfare depot building providing approximately 617m² of accommodation, including offices, changing facilities, Roads and Housing workspaces, storage areas and equipment lockups.
Furthermore, the Council say the development “will enhance operational efficiency, improve health and safety standards and provide capacity to support the future delivery of Council services throughout Thurles Municipal District.”
The plans to move to a new location Archerstown Industrial Park comes just a few weeks after plans for a new roundabout at the notorious junction were passed at a Council meeting. Depending on funding, there are hopes by local government politicians that the works could begin early in 2027, and take about six months to complete.
