Tipperary County Council has carried out temporary repairs to a section of road at the entrance to a Clonmel housing estate that was severely damaged by heavy rainfall in recent days, and will carry out more work to repair and restore the road surface this Thursday.

Photos showing the poor state of a section of road outside the entrance to the Cashel Road estate Ard na Sidhe was posted on the Clonmel Community Help & Support Facebook page on Sunday, accompanied by a warning to motorists to take care when driving over it due to its “dangerous” condition.

Tipperary County Council's Director of Roads Liam Brett said the Council was notified of the damage to the road surface at this location and carried out temporary repairs at the site on Monday and will carry out more work on Thursday.

“The Council carried out jetting of the surface water network to ensure it is operating efficiently.

"The area has been made safe and temporary repairs have been undertaken pending permanent remedial works,” he explained.

“Our contractor is scheduled to attend the site on Thursday, September 3, to carry out repairs to the affected section of roadway and restore the surface to the required standard.”

Mr Brett pointed out that the section of road where the damage occurred was not resurfaced recently as was claimed online.

“There was a ramp installed adjacent to this section, and this has a new surface,” he said.

Clonmel Cllr Richie Molloy, who reported the damaged road to the Council on Monday, welcomed the local authority's quick action to carry out repairs.

"It could have led to a dangerous situation if it had been left in that condition.

“The subsidence of the road just shows you the amount of rain that fell," the Independent councillor added.
