Congratulations to St Joseph’s Primary School, Tipperary Town, who won the Best Primary School Choir in the RTE Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas Competition 2022.

The Fifth and Sixth Class Choir is under the baton of Helen Colbert, who also won the Conductor Award in 2018. Evelyn Grant from Lyric FM announced the Choirs for Christmas Winners during her Lyric FM show.

This is the fourth time that St Joseph’s Primary School, Tipperary Town has won this award.

School principal Louise Tobin says that the songs selected by Ms Colbert play a huge part in the Choir’s success.

“The songs are typically upbeat, happy songs that the girls just love to learn and perform with such enthusiasm at Christmas time,” said Ms Tobin.

St Joseph’s School Choir was first formed in 1998.

This year’s winning choir was made up of 41 students from Fifth and Sixth Classes.

The Choir rehearses every Tuesday from 1.30pm – 2.30pm. St Joseph’s School Choir regularly performs for the school community and at many local events.

Over the years St Joseph’s has produced several CDs including two Christmas CDs and two springtime CDs and were also featured on the Lyric FM Christmas CD in 2012 with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

This is the Choir’s ninth time entering the “Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas Competition” and has achieved success as runners-up in 2011 and winners in 2014, 2017, 2018 and now in 2022. In 2017 and 2018 St Joseph’s Choir were invited to sing at the launch of the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal in Dublin in the company of Ryan Tubridy.

The winning song for this year was called Christmastime, That Special Time of Year and you can hear it on this link on Soundcloud; https://soundcloud.com/sbreathnach-553178735/deck-the-halls-christmas-time

Composer: Lynn Shaw Bailey and Becki Slagle Mayo, lyrics by Lynn Shaw Bailey and the accompaniment is provided by Ms Helen Colbert.
