JUNE 1994: Liam Kenny and Richard Whelan from Clonmel on their way to watch the Ireland v Mexico World Cup game on television (from the USA).
There’s no doubt about it, looking back now, those were the days my friends and we thought they’d never end!!!
The Jack Charlton era for Irish soccer, from 1986 to 1996, gave the nation many many great sporting years in an amazing decade and even if ultimately nothing was won in the line of silverware, the memories of Germany 1988, Italia ’90 and USA 1994 are deeply etched in the minds of those fortunate enough to have been around to enjoy them.
Who will ever forget the famous win over England in Stuttgart in 1988, the heartbreak of Toto Schillaci’s goal in Rome which knocked us out of the World Cup in 1990, and then the exploits of 1994 when Ray Houghton’s goal gave us some measure of revenge against the same Italians in the Giants Stadium in New Jersey. Alas all memories now.
No doubt, like the accompanying snapshot above, there are plenty of old photographs like this hanging about from those days and other great days that you and your family and friends enjoyed and remember. Why not share them with us over the coming weeks, in print and online.
WHAT IS SNAPSHOTS?
We have all become used to scrolling through the galleries of photos on our smartphones but what about those much-loved print photographs stashed away in the attic, in a box under the bed or in that “miscellaneous” drawer in the kitchen? Are they destined to be forgotten forever in the digital age?
Well, it’s time to dig them out and show them some love.
We want readers to take a photo of those much-loved print photos and send them to us. Whether it was taken a few years ago on an instant camera or a few decades ago, we want the photo that stands out for you.
It can be from a social event, a landscape shot, a funny pic or even a holiday snap - we want them all. Yes, even those dodgy “look at the state of my hair” debs photos!
