Scallywags preschool in Two Mile Borris celebrates 25 wonderful years

Over the years, Scallywags has become much more than just a preschool in Two Mile Borris
When Scallywags Preschool first opened its doors 25 years ago, Tracey never imagined the journey would last this long — or be this meaningful and rewarding.
“Little did I think that when I opened Scallywags, I’d still be here 25 years later,” she says. “And now, having the children of past pupils coming through my hands — that’s something I never could have envisaged.”

Over the years, Scallywags has become much more than just a preschool. It’s a place built on care, trust, and community.
According to Tracey the secret to its success is simple: a genuine love of children, supportive, kind and happy parents, and a team of dedicated staff.
“I’ve always been blessed with excellent hardworking caring and loyal staff from day one right up to today,” she says.
“In my opinion, that’s what creates a happy and secure environment at Scallywags where children can grow, flourish, and reach their full potential.”

The preschool has grown and adapted over time, always keeping children’s needs at the centre of everything. Staff are qualified to degree level and continue to take part in ongoing training to ensure they can support every child in the best way possible.
This commitment to development can also be seen in the facilities. Scallywags now boasts a purpose-built all-weather outdoor area, along with an outdoor sensory classroom — spaces designed to give every child the chance to learn, explore, and thrive.
But beyond the buildings and qualifications, it’s the relationships and interactions that matter most.

“As early educators, we have to be aware of the ever-changing needs of children, but one thing that never changes is how important it is for them to bond together,” she explains.
“They start together, build companionship, and it’s lovely to see those friendships still there in adulthood. I witness it all the time.”
Meeting past pupils out and about socially is one of the greatest joys of the job. Seeing them on the hurling field or hearing what they’re up to and seeing the adults they’ve become is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact those early years can have and how much I really enjoyed them.
As Scallywags marks its 25th anniversary, it’s clear that its story is not just about education — it’s about generations of children, families, and staff growing together, and a community that continues to thrive and Tracey hopes she will be around for the next 25 years.
