The River Suir swim races in aid of South Tipperary Hospice Movement took place in Carrick-on-Suir last Saturday

Swimmers and triathletes from clubs across Munster and neighbouring Kilkenny competed in the Barry McCarthy Memorial Charity Swims in Carrick-on-Suir last Saturday afternoon.

The men's and women’s 500m, 750m and 1,500 swim races in the River Suir at Sean Healy Park took place under Mediterranean weather conditions.

The swims in aid of South Tipperary Hospice Movement are hosted each year by Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club in memory of the club's former chairman Barry McCarthy who passed away in 2009.

Members of his family attended the races that many triathletes use as a practice for the Carrick-on-Suir Sprint Triathlon which starts at Sean Healy Park this Sunday, July 19 at 11am.

A large contingent from Carrick Triathlon Club competed with Dylan Thomas and Stephanie Keating the top performers of the meet, each winning two races.

Garry McCarthy, the late Barry McCarthy's twin brother thanked Orafol Waterford, David Skelly of Carrick's Sean Kelly Sports Centre and local businesses for their support of the swim races.

He also thanked the First Aid volunteers and kayakers who provided health and safety cover at the races and all who helped organise the event, which has, so far, raised over €2,000 for South Tipperary Hospice.
