Noel McGrath played from the start for Tipperary in the loss to Limerick on Sunday

Liam Cahill says Noel McGrath has earned the right to decide on his own future after speculation intensified following Tipperary’s defeat to Limerick on Sunday.

Questions have swirled around whether the long-serving stalwart will return for another season in blue and gold, but Cahill insisted the Loughmore Castleiney man will be afforded the same respect and freedom he has enjoyed throughout his career.

“Noel’s record speaks for itself,” Cahill said afterwards.

“Noel will be given the opportunity, like he has every year during my term, to make up his own mind, because that’s how good a player he is.”

McGrath remains one of the most decorated and admired figures in Tipperary hurling, having been a central figure since 2010. Despite persistent retirement talk in recent seasons, the four-time All-Ireland winner has continued to make valuable contributions whenever called upon.

Cahill stressed that the decision will ultimately come down to the player himself and believes McGrath is best placed to judge whether he still has the appetite for another campaign.

“He’s the one player in Tipperary who is very self-aware of what needs to happen,” Cahill added.

“I’m sure he’ll have a good reflection over the next few weeks and months to see whether he wants to go again.”

While no decision is expected immediately, Cahill’s comments suggest the door remains open should McGrath opt to extend his inter-county career into another season.
