The Tipperary County Novice B Road Race took place on Sunday last in Fethard Town Park.

There was a total of 45 participants competing from Tipperary clubs on a sunny afternoon.

EDEL’S POWER RUNNING

From the gun in the women’s 3k race the Fethard women were very prominent and competing well with Dundrum AC. Our own Edel Roche got a 10 metre advantage coming through the first 1,500 metres and in an exhibition of power running extended that lead through the second half of the race to come home a convincing winner in a time of 11.30.

Attention then turned to the rest of the Fethard team, as Abaigeal Maher came storming home, finishing in fifth place in a time of 12.02, showing great finishing speed. Abaigeal was followed directly by Paula Hendriksen in sixth in a time of 12.11.

These three women combined to win the County Novice B Championship. This is the first time our club has won this particular championship.

Fethard AC are proud to have had enough runners for two teams with the second team made up of Marie Carroll, who ran a fantastic race in 13.43, Isobel Minogue who ran 15.56, Lorraine Kennedy 17.30 and Katie Ryan 17.40. It was great running from our women’s teams on Sunday last.

JAMES OUR TOP MAN

The men’s 6k race was a very competitive event and the first man home for Fethard AC was James Maher in 10th place in a time of 22.16. There was a strong finish from Joe Morgan, coming home 11th in 22.20. Next in 16th place was Jack Spillane having another good run in 23.24. Eddie Hayes should be happy with his run in his debut season, finishing well in 27.08. Kevin O’Meara was next in 27.11 and completing our team of runners we had Billy Prout finishing in 28.48.

Thank you to Tommy and the team at The Fethard Town Park, all our wonderful members who stewarded the course, made sandwiches and created a wonderful atmosphere. As always they’re super supporters.

We are very grateful to The County Board Chairman Owen Fanning, a proud Fethard AC man, and the team of the Tipperary County Board. Without them, these events would not happen.

Thanks also to the emergency First Aid responder Pearl for being there all day long to keep us out of harm’s way.
