Club in Tipperary invites young people to give rowing a go

Clonmel Rowing Club are recruiting new junior rowers and they are having an open weekend at the club in Irishtown this Friday August 28 at 6.30pm and on Saturday and Sunday at 9am.

There are lots of opportunities for young people to participate in sport in Clonmel and the benefits of sport in the development of young people cannot be underestimated.

Clonmel Rowing Club has been providing rowing on the river Suir since 1869 and generations of boys and girls have participated in the sport. One of those was Daire Lynch, who won a bronze medal in the 2x at the 2024 Olympic Games. Daire had previously tried his hand at football, swimming and tennis, but he really found his groove when he took up rowing. The friends that he made at the club are still some of his best friends today.

Rowing is the ultimate team sport, remember a crew of four or eight all have to move as one unit and it's hugely character-forming, in the opinion of Rowing Ireland President and Clonmel Rowing Club member Jane Williams. It engages over 80% of the muscles in the body, combining strength and cardiovascular conditioning, while remaining low impact on the joints.

Some of the long hard training sessions can leave you feeling exhausted, but they can also have an exhilarating effect and there is great satisfaction in mastering the technical aspects of rowing. So, young people between the ages of 12 to 15, come on down to Clonmel Rowing Club this weekend and give rowing a go. Those who know row.

Best of luck to the club’s Masters rowers who are racing at the World Masters Regatta on beautiful Lake Bled in Slovenia in early September. They have been attending training sessions all over the country in recent weeks and they are primed to deliver top class performances.
