Kilfeacle and District RFC continued their impressive start to the Munster Junior League Division 1 campaign with a commanding 43-0 victory over Newcastle West at the Cullinagh Grounds in Newcastle West on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors produced a superb all-round performance, crossing the Newcastle West try line on seven occasions to record a thoroughly deserved bonus-point victory. The result was another emphatic statement of intent from a Kilfeacle side that is beginning to demonstrate just how formidable its squad can be, despite arriving in Newcastle West without two influential players, first centre Bryan McLaughlin and out-half Luke Heuston.

McLaughlin, who had crossed the try line in the previous week's win over Suttonians in the Munster Junior Cup, and Luke Heuston, who had contributed an impressive 17 points through a try and six conversions in that same game, were notable absentees. Their unavailability, alongside an existing injury list, might have presented a significant challenge for many teams. However, Kilfeacle once again demonstrated that they possess strength throughout their squad, with players stepping up admirably to fill the gaps.

The victory also carries considerable significance in the league standings. Four rounds into the competition, Kilfeacle have accumulated the maximum possible 20 points from their opening fixtures and currently occupy top spot in the Junior 1 league table. While there are still eight rounds remaining and plenty of rugby to be played, Sunday's performance will undoubtedly provide further confidence as they continue their pursuit of league honours.

From the outset, Kilfeacle looked determined to take control, and it took just eight minutes for them to register their first try. Some excellent forward play laid the foundations for the opening score, with the Kilfeacle pack producing powerful work to create the opportunity. The ball was moved effectively, allowing Brian Barlow to receive possession and launch a powerful run through the Newcastle West defence. Showing impressive pace and determination, Barlow broke through and sprinted into the opposition's 22 before touching down for the opening try. Jamie Heuston added the conversion to give the visitors a perfect start and establish a 7-0 advantage.

The second try arrived just five minutes later, in the 13th minute, as the visitors demonstrated the attacking threat they possessed across the backline. Excellent fielding by Killian Noonan helped create the platform, while some slick handling and impressive passing through the Kilfeacle backs opened up the Newcastle West defence. The ball was worked out to winger Ben Farrelly, who finished the move superbly by crossing in the corner. Although Jamie Heuston's conversion attempt drifted wide, Kilfeacle had extended their lead to 12-0 and were already looking very comfortable.

The third try arrived in the 23rd minute and was a reward for another period of sustained pressure. This time, the Kilfeacle pack made their presence felt through a powerful rolling maul. With excellent organisation and determination, they drove towards the Newcastle West try line, creating the perfect opportunity for Ricky Whitney to finish from the base of the maul. The conversion was again unsuccessful, but Kilfeacle had moved into a commanding 17-0 lead.

With three tries already on the scoreboard, attention naturally turned towards securing the all-important fourth try and the accompanying bonus point. However, what followed was an extraordinary period of frustration for the visitors. Kilfeacle appeared to have crossed the Newcastle West try line on no fewer than four separate occasions during the next 30 minutes, only to be denied each time as the home defence managed to hold the ball up.

Despite their obvious superiority in territory and possession, the visitors found themselves repeatedly unable to ground the ball over the line. The home side deserve credit for their resilience during this spell, as they repeatedly prevented the visitors from adding to their tally.

Nevertheless, the pressure eventually became too much to withstand. In the 53rd minute, Kilfeacle finally secured their fourth try and the bonus point their overall performance deserved. An excellent attacking move from the backs created the opening, with the ball moving through the hands before Muiri Lambe found the space to finish confidently.

The try was a welcome reward for the visitors' persistence and effectively ended any remaining doubt about the outcome. Jamie Heuston stepped up for the conversion, but his attempt struck the upright and bounced away. The scoreboard read 22-0, with Kilfeacle now safely over the bonus-point line.

There was no let-up from the visitors, however, and Jamie Heuston was the next player to get his name on the scoresheet. Just four minutes after the previous try, in the 57th minute, the Kilfeacle out half produced an excellent individual effort to cross the Newcastle West line. He then added the conversion to bring his personal contribution to the scoreboard and extend Kilfeacle's advantage to 29-0.

The sixth try arrived in the 66th minute and was another demonstration of the visitors' ability to break through defensive lines. Kevin Kinane produced a powerful and unstoppable burst through the centre of the Newcastle West defence, using his strength and determination to break free and touch down. Ciaran Lowry took over the kicking responsibilities and successfully added the conversion, pushing the score out to 36-0.

In the 75th minute replacement Darragh Kennedy crossed for Kilfeacle's seventh and final try of the afternoon. Kennedy made an immediate impact after entering the field, finishing off another successful attacking passage to add further gloss to an already impressive scoreline. Ciaran Lowry again converted, bringing the final score to 43-0 and completing a comprehensive afternoon's work for the visitors.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the game for Kilfeacle supporters was the manner in which the team responded to the absence of several important players. The contributions of the entire squad highlighted the competition for places and the depth available to the management team. With a lengthy league campaign still ahead, having players capable of stepping into important positions and maintaining such high standards will be invaluable.

However, there will be no room for complacency. Kilfeacle’s next match is a league encounter at home against Crosshaven RFC at Morrissey Park next Sunday November 8, with kick-off at 2.30pm.
