Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society has been presented with two plaques honouring awards it won for shows it staged at the former Waterford International Festival of Light Opera in the 1990s.

The plaques marking Carrick Musical Society winning the renowned musical theatre festival's overall prize in 1994 for its staging of Chess and in 1997 for its performance of Me & My Girl hung in The Munster Bar for many years. The bar is located next to Waterford’s Theatre Royal where the festival took place.

The bar's former owner Peter Fitzgerald, visited the Strand Theatre in Carrick-on-Suir to gift the two plaques commemorating the awards to Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society two weeks ago.

For decades, The Munster Bar hosted the festival club, and Peter and his family proudly displayed a plaque for each winning production in the pub.

“With the pub now sold, Peter has ensured that our two plaques will continue to be proudly displayed — this time at the Strand Theatre in Carrick-on-Suir,” said Carrick Musical Society PRO Siobhán Grace-Regan.

“We are delighted to see these wonderful reminders of our Waterford International Festival of Light Opera successes preserved and given a new home where they can be enjoyed by future generations.

“A heartfelt thank you to Peter Fitzgerald for helping to preserve this special part of our history,” she added.
