Green Light for new astro-turf community sportfield in Tipperary

New all-weather sports facility approved to serve clubs, schools and community
Planning permission has been granted for the development of a new synthetic astro-turf training pitch at Ballingarry Community Sportsfield.
Tipperary County Council granted conditional approval on June 2 for the project at Kyleballygalvan, Bolintlea, Ballingarry.
The approved development includes a synthetic astro-turf training pitch, associated floodlighting, perimeter steel fencing, ball catch netting, a hurling ball wall and all associated site works.
In supporting documentation submitted with the application, Ballingarry Community Sportsfield Committee said participation in local sport has grown significantly in recent years across hurling, football, camogie and soccer.
The committee said the increased demand has placed pressure on the existing playing field, particularly during periods of wet weather when overuse can cause damage to the pitch.
The committee stated that the development of a second pitch, particularly an all-weather facility, had been a long-standing ambition. The proposed location was described as ideal because it is adjacent to existing amenities, including dressing rooms and toilet facilities.
While the sportsfield's primary focus is the promotion of Gaelic games, the committee said it has adopted a policy of social inclusion by making facilities available to community groups for a range of physical activities.
The application also highlighted the success of a floodlit walking track constructed around the perimeter of the main pitch in 2023. According to the committee, usage of the walkway has exceeded expectations and has provided a safe environment for exercise for people of all ages.
The proposed astro-turf facility is intended to support children's physical development through games and play while also providing a secure environment through perimeter fencing.
The adjoining Commons National School is expected to have full access to the facility during school hours under a formal licensing agreement. The committee said the pitch would be used daily for playtime and physical education and would also be available to other schools in the parish when required.
In its submission, the committee noted that there is currently no community-owned facility of this type in the parish. Tipperary County Council has now granted conditional planning permission for the development.
