Sharlene Mawdsley ran a blistering anchor leg for Ireland in the mixed 4x400m relay final at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Apeldorn on Thursday evening, but it wasn't enough for Ireland to clinch a medal as they finished fifth overall.
The relay team of Conor Kelly, Marcus Lawler, Phil Healy and Mawdsley ran a time of 3:17:63.
Ireland were well behind after the first three runs of the relay, but impressively, Mawdsley ran a blistering time to bring Ireland from the back and into fifth place.
Despite the loss, Mawdsley showed great form and, on the evidence of this run, she will be in good shape for the remainder of her involvement in this year's championships.
She will continue her championships on Friday morning, competing in round 1 of the Women's 400m heats that gets underway at 11am.
