Congrats Maeve Carroll of Garrandee, New Inn, Cashel
Maeve Carroll, Garrandee, New Inn, Cashel, is the Cashel Young Person of the Year 2024.
Maeve is a Sixth Year student in Cashel Community School and she was selected, during a highly competitive interview process, from thirteen applicants who were nominated for the honour of being Cashel Young Person of the Year 2024.
The Cashel Young Person of the Year Competition is organised annually by Cashel Lions Club and the 2024 final took place in Cashel Community School in early December.
Maeve impressed the interview panel with her passion for her local community and with the range of leadership roles she has played in her school and in her community.
Maeve was group leader for the Cashel Community School prizewinning entry in the Young Scientist Competition in January 2024. Maeve and her team mates studied the decomposition of leaves on a lawn and researched, ‘a solution to quicken up the decomposition of leaves to help local communities control the large quantities of leaves that fall from trees in public areas each Autumn’.
Maeve and her team raised awareness of this issue by being interviewed on Tipp Mid-West Radio and by visiting local primary schools in Cashel and New Inn.
Maeve’s leadership ability was recognised by her fellow students in Cashel Community School when she was selected as Student Council Chairperson for the 2024/25 school year.
Maeve’s goal as chairperson is to ‘make the school experience for students more enjoyable everyday’.
Maeve also describes herself as being ‘privileged to be part of the Links Programme in her school and to have the opportunity to support first year students as they start on their journey through life in Cashel Community School’.
Maeve is passionate about Irish music and is an accomplished fiddle player.
She has also distinguished herself on the camogie field and has represented her club and her county ‘playing one of the fastest field sports in the world’.
Maeve is the proud holder of a number of camogie medals and is particularly proud of ‘being part of the Tipperary under 16 team that won a Munster Camogie Shield’.
Maeve has a ‘huge interest in dairy farming’ and after the Leaving Certificate she hopes to ‘pursue a career based on helping farmers develop more sustainable methods to enhance the future of Irish agriculture’.
Cashel Lions Club would like to thank Ian Shelly and Tim Molan from Affinity Credit Union Cashel for their generous sponsorship of the Cashel Young Person of the Year Competition.
The club is also deeply indebted to Ian Shelly, Margaret Skehan and Pat Buckley who gave so generously of their time to interview each of the thirteen applicants who were nominated for this year’s competition.
As Cashel Young Person of the Year 2024 Maeve Carroll will travel to Carlow on Saturday, January 18, to compete in the Lions Clubs of Ireland Young Ambassador of the 21st Century Final.
Cashel Lions Club congratulates Maeve on being selected as Cashel Young Person of the Year 2024 and the club wishes her every success in the national final in Carlow later this month.
