Local Tipperary Lions Club enjoys successful trip to west Cork

It was factor 50, sun glasses, and sun hats all week long for the forty five senior citizens who travelled to Kenmare for the annual Senior Citizens Holiday organised by Cashel Lions Club.

The group left Cashel on Sunday, May 11, in glorious sunshine and it was blue skies from dawn to dusk until the bus returned to Cashel on Friday, May 16.

The group stayed in the Kenmare Bay Hotel which proved to be an excellent base to explore the wonders of south Kerry and west Cork.

The group travelled to Killarney and savoured the delights of Muckross House & Gardens.

They also had an opportunity to travel the renowned Ring of Kerry which was spectacular in the glorious sunshine.

A visit to Derrynane House was followed by a beach walk and a visit to Waterville where they enjoyed a lovely lunch.

One of the many highlights of the week was a boat trip on the high seas to witness the beauty and colour of tropical gardens on Garnish Island.

The group also had an opportunity to test their sea legs on a boat trip around Kenmare Bay.

An extensive entertainment programme which included bingo, a table quiz, music and dancing helped the group to relax and socialise before retiring for a well-earned night’s rest.

The Senior Citizens Holiday is one of the most popular community service projects organised by Cashel Lions Club in conjunction with Cahir Lions Club.

This year’s trip to Kenmare keeps alive a long tradition of Senior Citizen’s Holidays which were started by Dan Dillon who for many years organised trips to Carne in Co Wexford for the senior citizens of Cashel and surrounding areas.

At the monthly meeting of Cashel Lions Club on Tuesday, May 27, Club President Tom Horan paid tribute to Willie Fahey who masterminded this year’s holiday.

Tom complimented Willie on his attention to detail and on the time and energy he invested in the project, all of which combined to make this year’s holiday such an outstanding success.

Tom also acknowledged the invaluable support provided by Kate Fahey which enhanced the enjoyment and safety of all those who participated in the holiday.

Tom also thanked Marie Gayson, Monica Slattery, Margaret Molan Ryan and Mary Gleeson who travelled to Kenmare to assist with various activities during the week.

The holiday is organised in conjunction with Cahir Lions Club and Tom paid tribute to Patsy McGurk who was of enormous assistance to Willie Fahey in finalising arrangements for this major community service project.

Cashel Lions Club thanks all those who support our various fundraisers and activities.

These generous donations and this ongoing support allow the club to organise and support such popular and enjoyable community service projects as the annual Senior Citizens Holiday.
