A dawn to dusk climb to the highest points in the Comeragh, Knockmealdown and Galtee Mountains is the challenge facing a group of Cashel Lions Club members on Saturday, October 11.

Willie Fahey, DJ Horan, Michael Begley and Eddie Morrissey will lead the race to the top in this year’s 3 Tops Challenge.

They will be joined on the day by some other members of Cashel Lions Club, including Club President, Monica Slattery and recent recruits Margaret Molan Ryan and Mary Gleeson who will complete the final section of the challenge on the Galtee Mountains.

The group will leave Cashel under the cover of darkness on October 11 and head to the Mahon Falls car park, near Rathgormack in Co Waterford.

From there they will take on the steep ascent to Fauscoum/Kilclooney Mountain (793 metres), the highest point in the Comeragh Mountains.

When they have completed this up and down challenge the group will then travel by car to the Bay Lough car park above Clogheen in the Knockmealdown Mountains.

They plan to be climbing to Knockmealdown (794 metres) before the clock strikes twelve.

When they have returned to base camp near Baylough the group will then head to the Black Road near Skeheenarinky for the final challenge of the day, which will be Galtee Mór (919 metres).

While the group plan to complete this final up and down climb in daylight hours they will have a head torch in the bag in the event that the autumnal light fades.

Since 2020 the annual hillwalking challenge is the major fundraiser for Cashel Lions Club.

The generosity of the local community, local businesses, and the many friends and supporters of Cashel Lions Club has allowed the club to provide a number of significant community service projects which are hugely beneficial to the community.

Recent fundraisers have facilitated the purchase of a minibus for the Cashel Day Care Centre in June 2025.

The generosity of the local community has also made it possible for Cashel Lions Club to organise the annual Senior Citizens’ Party, the Senior Citizens’ Holiday, the Christmas Food Appeal, Christmas presents for the residents of the Cashel Residential Older Persons Service in Our Lady’s Hospital and a range of other community service and support projects.

Cashel Lions Club is appealing to the local community to support this year’s 3 Tops Challenge by contributing to the street collection on Friday October 10.

Donations can also be made online through the Cashel Lions 3 Tops Challenge Idonate online fundraising page.

Members of Cashel Lions club will also be calling to local businesses asking for sponsorship for this year’s challenge.

All money raised by the 3 Tops Challenge will be used locally by Cashel Lions Club to enhance the quality of life for the local community in Cashel and surrounding areas.

The generosity of the local community will be appreciated by the Cashel Lions Club, which has been serving the local community since 1961.
