A sad day for music lovers as Clonmel Golden Discs announced its closure

Golden Discs in Clonmel has announced it will be closing its doors for the final time on Sunday September 13, after nearly 40 years in business in the town.

Whether you picked up your first CD here, reignited a passion for collecting vinyl or picked up a new movie for a weekend watch, the shop is one that has been treasured by many over the years and will certainly be missed.

In a statement on social media, they wrote:

“After decades of soundtracking Clonmel, Golden Discs closes its doors this Sunday, 13 September.

“Some of you will remember the O'Connell Mall days - the original trio of Ian, Keith and Mick behind the counter. Queuing for Oasis tickets, camping in the doorway after Danno's to be first in line when they went on sale - back when a new single or album release meant a queue before opening. Times have changed for the music business, and sadly, for the first time since the 70s, Clonmel is without a record shop.

“Since moving to the Showgrounds in 2009, Golden Discs was the first port of call for so many on their way in — whether for a browse or a chat with Ian Anderson, who was at the helm from 1988 right up to 2025, carried on by Dean Morrisey. They were joined over the years by Boru O'Mahoney, Ed Mason, Killian Taylor, Alan Green, Aidan Casey, Jake and Aoife, Josh Morrisey and many more behind the counter.

“Thank you for the music, all. Clonmel won't forget it

“Call in before Sunday to say goodbye — and share your Golden Discs memories in the comments. We'd love to hear them.”

Unfortunately, it likely won’t come as surprise as physical media, though experiencing a small renaissance in recent years, has been on the decline since online streaming became a household norm. However, let this be a good reason to go down and show support to Golden Discs Clonmel and the many artists whose work is housed on their shelves.
