A Garda operation was recently carried out at The Vee resulting in about 70 boy racers fleeing from the scene, but now councillors have called for roadworks to be carried out to make it harder for such activity to take place in the first instance.

The Vee, an irresistibly attractive road for drivers and bikers alike, is drawing boy racers in large numbers.

The issue was brought to light at a council meeting earlier this week, where Cllr Mairin McGrath called on the council to take action, saying it was “disturbing the peace” of locals.

Her colleague Cllr Marie Murphy asked for roadworks in the area, that might put a halt to the boy racers, about 70 of whom had converged in the area one evening recently.

"They scattered very quickly because of the two squad cars that were there. The operation was deemed a success, but there needs to be surfacing works, narrowing of the spaces and more of that kind of work carried out in the area,” said Cllr Murphy.

The Clogheen councillor said some works had been carried out successfully at Bay Lough to stop boy racers, and asked for similar works to be carried out at other locations at The Vee.

James Swords, executive engineer, said the activity would have to be dealt with by the Gardaí but that the council would be happy to help out with the type of works, as suggested by the councillors
