Champion boxer from Tipperary sets her sights on world titles

Boxer Shauna Browne receives mayoral reception in Clonmel
A champion boxer has promised to bring world titles back to her hometown Clonmel.
Shauna Browne made the pledge when she was feted by Mayor Siobhán Ambrose and members of Clonmel Borough District at a mayoral reception in the Town Hall.
She said that to do so, she needed her town and county supporting her in her quest for world glory.
Nicknamed ‘The Carrigeen Queen’, after her home estate, Shauna recently added to her growing reputation when she beat Isle of Man fighter Jade Burden at the Harrow Leisure Centre in London to lift the WBA Gold and IBF International Lightweight titles.

During the summer she won the WBO European Lightweight Championship by beating French boxer Lilia Cherifi.
She said that she really appreciated the honour of the mayoral reception to celebrate her success. She said these victories in the ring weren’t just for her, but for everybody in the town.
She said that while there were a lot of negative things in Clonmel, there was “a lot of positive stuff going on too” and this should be shared more.
Although based in Brentwood in Essex, every time she stepped in the ring she fought to do her town, county and country proud.

She paid tribute to her former club, Clonmel Boxing Club, and also praised two other Clonmel boxers; Kaysie Joyce, who recently won a bronze medal at the World Under 19 Boxing Championships, and Conor Donovan, who was doing well as a professional.
Shauna added that she wouldn’t be where she is without the support of her beautiful family and friends.
The Mayor, Siobhán Ambrose, said that Shauna was a role model and many young people, especially girls, looked up to her. She had done her family; her former club Clonmel Boxing Club; her town, county and country proud.

She had attended school at St. Oliver’s and the Presentation Secondary and had started boxing at the age of 14. She took a break from boxing and qualified as a personal trainer, and ran gyms for six years.
She had won five national titles and since turning professional in 2023 had won nine of her ten fights. She was the number one in Europe and was also the first Irish female professional to win a WBO title.
Cllr Ambrose said that Shauna's number one supporter was her mother Geraldine, very closely followed by her sister Katie, brother Stephen and extended family.

The Mayor also acknowledged the huge role that Clonmel Boxing Club had played in her journey and said the town was lucky to have such a club.
She was delighted to welcome club coach Martin Fennessy to the reception.
Cllr Pat English said it was an honour and privilege to join in this celebration of Shauna’s remarkable achievements.
He said she had shown tremendous courage to come back from serious injury in recent years, and was a wonderful ambassador for her town and county.
Cllr John FitzGerald said he was struck by how cool and committed she was. The people of Clonmel were really proud of her.
Cllr Richie Molloy said that Shauna had brought great credit to the town.
Clonmel had many sporting champions in the past. It was lovely to see a new generation coming along and he was sure she would go from strength to strength.
