Uisce Éireann has committed to reviewing the proposed closure of Poulavanogue
A committee has been established following a public meeting held in Clonmel several weeks ago to address growing concerns about the future of the town’s water supply.
The meeting brought together local public representatives, business people, householders and community members, reflecting the widespread frustration across Clonmel regarding the lack of communication and engagement from Uisce Éireann.
The committee recognises the significant €23 million investment in Clonmel’s water infrastructure, including the development of the Monroe Water Treatment Plant. However, the key priority for the group is to ensure that Poulavanogue is retained as a secondary or backup water source for the town.
The committee is also seeking a full assessment and report on the Ragwell Reservoir, including its capacity and potential role in providing additional security of supply for Clonmel.
There is considerable concern within the community about the proposed closure of Poulavanogue, as well as questions surrounding the future water supply from Monroe, including issues around water hardness and the potential impact on households and businesses.
The committee believes that the people of Clonmel, local businesses and elected representatives have not received the level of communication and engagement they deserve from Uisce Éireann.
Uisce Éireann has committed to reviewing the proposed closure of Poulavanogue, and the committee is now awaiting the relevant reports and information.
The committee’s position is clear: investment in Monroe should continue, but Poulavanogue should be retained as a secondary source and the Ragwell Reservoir should be fully assessed as part of Clonmel’s future water security.
The committee will continue to seek answers from Uisce Éireann and advocate for a secure, resilient and properly planned water supply for the people and businesses of Clonmel.
