Huge funding set to transform Clonmel town centre
Two projects crucial to the regeneration of Clonmel town centre have been allocated over €13 million in funding.
€7.5 million has been allocated for a Clonmel town centre public realm regeneration scheme and €5.6 million has been allocated for the Reimagining DW Parkes:The Clonmel Pharmacy Historical Quarter.
The significant funding announced for Tipperary County Council on Monday morning under the towns and cities regeneration investment fund has been widely welcomed.
Both schemes were described as Category 1B, which focuses on projects that can be delivered in the short-term and relate to projects that can be on site by September 2027.
The public realm project embraces O’Connell Street from the West Gate to the Main Guard and would also include Mitchell Street, Abbey Street and Bank Lane.
The other application concerned a project in Gladstone Street. That project would consist of the creation of a plaza-style public realm space and the development of a museum at the former DW Parke’s chemist and opticians premises and the Landmark Trust occupation of the upper floors of that building. The project would be contained in the area between the laneway to the side of Easons and up to the Place4U building, and up to the edge of Kickham Street.
Welcoming the funding, Deputy Michael Murphy said the funding of €13,100,000 will transform the face of Clonmel.
Deputy Murphy said this funding for 2 projects in Clonmel will also help redevelop vacant or underused sites.
“This funding is a huge boost to Clonmel, which is somewhere we all want to be able to congregate in, whether it’s to go shopping, meet friends or family, or just visit to absorb the daily activity.
“Today’s announcement highlights Fine Gael’s strong commitment to supporting our communities both economically and socially.
“In particular, I’m delighted to see €7.5 million for Phase 1 - Clonmel Town Centre Public Realm Regeneration Scheme and €5.6 million for Reimagining DW Parkes: The Clonmel Pharmacy Historical Quarter. We all want to see regeneration in our own communities and to provide spaces that are safe and attractive for people from all generations to gather and enjoy.
“Across the country, this funding will drive economic growth, increase town footfall, combat dereliction, develop community and civic infrastructure, and I want to pay tribute to Tipperary County Council for their submissions and also to our local community groups and social enterprises who worked with them to devise projects that will benefit everyone living and working here.
“When complete, these projects will leave a lasting difference in Clonmel and will help to continue to make our towns and cities great places to live, work and raise a family,” concluded Deputy Michael Murphy.
