Tipperary Roads Policing Unit were carry out hi-visibility patrols on Monday night when a motorist came upon one of their checkpoints.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after failing a road side breath test.
Gardaí added: "Back at the station we discovered the motorist to be almost five times over the limit for alcohol and has been charged to court.
"As always, never drive under the influence."
