In an interview to air on Monday night, the family say: "We think about him all the time. Where he was knocked down we pass it every day of the week. That's a reminder, so it has never left us. My mother and father were just absolutely uncontrollable. They were devasted, couldn't comprehend it.

"There wasn't any answers initially. You have to deal with that as well as the trauma of losing a child. I don't think they were the same for a long time.

"It was much later we found that he was walking home and that he got knocked down by a car and the driver didn't stop.

"How could someone leave somebody on the side of the road? My brother could have still been alive and nobody went to his aid.

"Just because it was 42 years ago, we're dealing with this every day of the week. We just have to keep trying, we can't just let it lie."

RTÉ's Crimecall is on at 9.35pm on Monday night after the news on RTÉ One.
