Carrick-on-Suir is gearing up for its annual Clancy Brothers Music & Arts Festival over the June Bank Holiday Weekend with a new generation Makem & Clancy concert among the star attractions.
The festival celebrating the music legacy of Carrick’s famous Clancy Brothers ballad group is marking its 16th anniversary and will run from Wednesday, May 31 to Monday, June 5.
It features an eclectic mix of indoor folk concerts, outdoor music performances, music and singing competitions, workshops and drama.
Other highlights will be a family fun afternoon, arts exhibitions trail, pub live music trail, walking and cycling events.
The festival will be officially opened by Tom Nealon of Brewery Lane Drama Group at Brewery Lane Theatre on Wednesday, May 31 prior to the start of the opening variety concert that will include performances from local singers and World Irish Dancing champion Aoife Twomey from Carrick-on-Suir.
Ticket booking for the concert opens at Brewery Lane on May 6.
The main attraction for folk music fans will be the concert by Rory Makem and Dónal Clancy, sons of the late Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy of the Clancy Brothers, at the Strand Theatre on Saturday, June 3.
They will be joined on stage with Donnchadh Gough on bodhran and Brendan Clancy on fiddle and mandolin. Tickets cost €20 and are already on sale for the show.
Tickets are also on sale for The Wood of O duo’s concert at the Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre on Sunday, June 4 at 8pm
The Wood of O are singer-songwriter Breege Phelan and songwriter/composer Will McLellan, who have been delighting audiences for the past five years with their original material and classic folk songs. They recently released a six track debut EP MountainSkyMoon.
Tickets for their concert are on sale at the Tudor Artisan Hub at 42 Main St., Carrick-on-Suir.
Other Clancy Brothers Festival concerts include Emer Dunne and Friends at Brewery Lane Theatre and the Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society Goes Folk concert at the Strand Theatre on Thursday, June 1. Both shows start at 8pm.
