Tipperary makes appearance in tense trailer of major movie filmed in Mid-West

TIPPERARY locations appear in the trailer for Bonhoeffer, a major feature which was filmed across the Mid-West region last year.

The major Irish-Belgian co-production which turned Tipperary, Limerick and Clare, into World War II Germany will be released in November 2024.

Parts of Bonhoeffer were filmed at The Swiss Cottage at Cahir and O’Brien’s Bridge, which straddles the Tipperary and Clare border.

Limerick's Pery Square also makes an appearance in the trailer as it was transformed into 1940s London. The airport and concentration camp scenes in the trailer were filmed at the Old Cleeve's Factory.

On set, this reporter had spoken to producer Mark O’Sullivan, who explained why they chose to film in the Mid-West.

During the interview, he had said: “We chose Limerick because of the landscape in and around the city.”

“There’s a bus journey that happens through the movie where Jonas Dassler is taken from prison to, unfortunately, his execution. The landscape up in The Burren really helped us through that,” he added.

Previously called God’s Spy, the Bonhoeffer movie tells the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a man who preached love while plotting the assassination of an evil tyrant. And with world-shattering stakes, Bonhoeffer begs the question - How far will you go to stand up for what’s right?

God’s Spy is directed by prolific screenwriter, producer and novelist, Todd Komarnicki, whose credits include ‘Sully’, ‘The Professor and the Madman’, as well as the Christmas blockbuster ‘Elf’ starring Will Ferrell. 

Producers of the Irish-Belgian co-production, whose base was at Innovate Limerick’s Engine building, had been working closely with Film in Limerick to achieve their vision

Regional Film Manager, Paul C Ryan, said: "It’s just brilliant to have Todd and his team filming in Limerick and Clare and Tipperary. We’re delighted to see so many locally based crew working on this film and to showcase all that the Mid-West has to offer as a film-friendly location for such major productions."
