Tipperary TD celebrates history in Dail as first-ever woman becomes Ceann Comhairle

There were scenes of jubilation in the Dail as Verona Murphy TD became the first-ever woman to hold the prestigious title of Ceann Comhairle.

A member of the Regional Group of TD’s, Deputy Murphy was nominated for this position by fellow Regional Group member, Michael Lowry TD.

Accepting the honour, Deputy Murphy told the packed Dail Chamber of her intention to "uphold simple principles to ensure Deputies could represent their electorate."

The Dail has now adjourned until January 22nd when talks will resume on the formation of the 34th Dail.
