Mattie McGrath has unexpectedly voted in favour of Micheál Martin's appointment as Taoiseach, during a Dáil vote this week.

The news of the vote surprised many as McGrath has been a fierce critic of Martin over the past few years.

Micheál Martin was appointed Taoiseach this Thursday January 23, the day after the first sitting of the Dáil was derailed when chaos broke out between members on Wednesday.

Other Independent TDs that voted in favour of Micheál Martin becoming the next Taoiseach were Kerry brothers, Michael and Danny Healy-Rae. 

This week the Dáil saw a shake-up when McGrath also joined fellow Tipperary TD Michael Lowry’s Regional Independent group.

He said the departures of TD's the Healy-Rae brothers and Michael Collins from his Rural Independents Group, has meant that the group has come to an end leaving him no choice but to join Lowry's Regional Independent Group.
