Fitzgibbon Cup: See how Tipperary players fared after the first week of action

The 2023 Fitzgibbon Cup got underway last week with plenty of Tipperary players populating the college teams so far.

Round 1 got underway last Wednesday January 18th with the Group A clash of MTU Cork and University of Galway, with the latter easing to a 2-21 to 2-16 win.

Tipperary senior panelist and Thurles Sarsfields Paddy Creedon started the game at full forward but had a frustrating day, going scoreless over the hour, but substitite Barry Kehoe of Kilsheelan Kilcash managed to score 0-1 from play off the bench.

In Group B, SETU Carlow played out an exciting 1-16 apiece draw with Mary Immaculate College on the same night, with Kenny Ryan of Toomevara bagging 1-1 for the Carlow college, while the big representation on the Mary I team were best served by Devon Ryan (Cashel KC) who finished with 0-8 (0-1 from play), along with JD Devaney of Borris-Ileigh who scored 0-2.

Two more first round matches took place on Thursday January 19th, first in Group C where UCC managed to squeeze past Maynooth University thanks to a 1-18 to 0-19 victory.

Colm Fogarty of Lorrha was the sole Tipperary representative on the pitch, lining out at corner forward for Maynooth on which he scored 0-1 from play.

The same night, Group D University of Limerick got their title defence off to an easy start with a comprehensive 13-point win over ATU Galway on a 2-23 to 2-10 scoreline.

Gearoid O'Connor (Moyne Templetuohy) continued his impressive form in this competition scoring 0-11 (0-3 from play), while Moycarkey Borris goalkeeper Rhys Shelly managed to bag a massive point from play from between the sticks during the game.

Bryan O'Mara had another typically assured performance at centre back, while Cian Darcy scored 0-1 from play after starting the game at corner forward; Conor O'Dwyer (Cashel KC) played the second half at corner back after coming on as a substitute.
